The Brilliance of Britishness

Did anyone else see the series ’Luther’? It was unbelievable, probably the best thing I have seen on television in a very long time and the best bit is it was British. The program lived up to all the codes and conventions of British filming, it continuously followed the theme of realism, which many British media products are based on. The series used British humor, a mix of sarcasm, cynicism and irony teamed with the gritty reality of being a police officer in today’s London. There was no painting over the cracks or viewing our legal system through rose tinted glasses. In true British style the series played on the dark side of the law. This series however was just a pilot, they were testing to see how successful the reaction to the series would be. When I heard this I was incredibly upset, as I thought that it would not be continued. However word on the grapevine is that it has been signed for another series. This is fantastic news. So for any of you who did not catch the first go watch it now and then get ready for the second series. This series has injected in to televisions what a variety of monotonous series and sitcoms steal from it. The series was gripping, entertaining and filled you with anticipation. Audiences willed to know what would happen next. The storylines used social realism so well that they were believable, none of this ’my sisters mother ate my granddaughters rabbit while being locked in a self storage container for five years in order to hurt the man that her god sister married’. British television has been stuck in a stagnant whirlpool of unbelievable drama or legal sitcoms that are set too far apart from reality. These dramas, soap operas and sitcoms dampened my passion for British media, however Luther managed to undo this. I hope to see more series like this on my television.
