Doctor Who is an extremely popular BBC television series in the UK. It is a science fiction drama, and, in fact is listed by the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest running drama in this category. The series involves a Doctor, who travels through space and time in his time machine. The Doctor also fights enemies and saves civilizations, with the help of his friends.

The original Doctor Who series aired from 1963 to 1989 in the UK. In 2005, it was brought back by the BBC in a new light. Several actors have played the role of the Doctor, and continuity is given to the role by saying that the Doctor takes a new personality and body when the lead actor changes. From 2010 onwards, the role of the Doctor has been played by Matt Smith.

The Doctor’s enemies include Daleks (who are mutant creatures from a planet called Skaro), Cybermen (who are humanoids) and Davros (a genius scientist from Skaro). His arch enemy, however, is The Master, a Time Lord with an expertise for regenerating himself. The Master first appeared in the series in 1971. John Simm is the most recent actor to have played this role in the series.

This popular television series has also resulted in the development of various types of related merchandise. Books and DVDs on Doctor Who have become a must-have for fans of the series.

Doctor Who has also won many UK awards such as the BAFTA, National Television Awards and British Academy Television Awards. It has also won awards in the US, winning the “Best International Series” Award at the Saturn Awards function in 2008.

Doctor Who’s impact on British popular culture cannot be emphasized enough. This is one television series that has different generations of viewers, from real estate agents to red diesel suppliers, still watching the show.
