Television Series Reviews – Top Gear
Top Gear is a popular television series about automobiles, on air since the year 2002. Although primarily aimed at a UK audience, it is watched by millions of people globally on BBC. It is a show that is popular with both men and women, and TVs in beauty parlours, botox UK clinics, sport bars as well as gyms are quite often tuned to it.
Top Gear’s presenters are Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. An added attraction is the anonymous test car driver known as “The Stig”. The series'presenters have gained an iconic status due to their knowledge, style of presentation and great humour.
The show is divided into various segments. These segments are races (where the presenters race a featured car against a chosen mode of transport), challenges (where the presenters take on wacky challenges related to cars), celebrity (where celebrities are made to take a test lap around the Top Gear track in ordinary, middle-class people’s cars) and Power Laps (where The Stig races cars on the Top Gear track to test their performance). New segments that have been added to the programme include The Cool Wall, where the presents ascertain which cars are “cool” and Unusual reviews (where the presenters review a car using unusual challenges).
Top Gear has also received its fair share of accolades and awards. It has won an Emmy Award in 2005 and the UK National Television Award between 2006-08 and 2011. It was also nominated for the BAFTA Awards between 2004-06. Channel 4’s survey in 2009 found that Top Gear was the decade’s best programme, according to respondents.
There have been attempts to replicate Top Gear’s success by having localised versions of the programme in Australia, Russia and the US. However, these localised versions were shelved due to lack of viewer interest.
Top Gear’s closest competitor in the automobile television series segment is Fifth Gear, which is hosted by many of Top Gear’s former presenters. Still, Top Gear remains at first place.
