The only way is to dumb down

I was around my girlfriend’s house a few weeks ago after a night out and we were having one of those lazy Sunday’s in front of the television. Usually I like to catch up with some Doctor Who or a decent sit com on iPlayer but all of her housemates were in as well so I didn’t really have much say in the matter. In these types of situations I don’t necessarily want to watch a documentary about Doug Hyde but something that is going to be entertaining and at the same time mildly stimulating.

What was put on for our entertainment was some repeat episodes of The Only Way Is Essex, a programme that I’d heard a few things about but never actually had the misfortune of actually watching until this particular moment.

Now such rubbish has never taken me aback. Firstly it doesn’t really know what it wants to be, is it a documentary or is it a drama? It is clear that somebody wants to get away with producing something very cheaply without having to pay any proper actors, writers or script editors. There is nothing natural or real about it in any way shape or form and the people in it just make me slightly nauseous.

I ended up having an argument with my girlfriend because as far as I’m concerned if we accept this as entertainment then what else are we going to accept? It is no surprise that we now have Channel Four jumping on the bandwagon with Made In Chelsea, it’s not long before all networks start to dumb down the quality of what they produce.
