The bold, the beautiful and the insane

The other day I was at my girlfriend’s place generally lazing around when suddenly she went ‘OMG’ and darted to the TV set. In those brief seconds, my mind panicked. Had aliens attacked us? Was there a tornado at our doorstep? Or horror of horrors, was a family member involved in a serious accident? I watched dumfounded as she raced not to miss even a second of the TV show, ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’.

Now mind you, this has been running from before I was born. I know because my mother once told me this. She used to be an avid watcher too. But then, by some fortunate stroke of destiny, sanity prevailed. My girlfriend in the meantime had tuned in to the relevant channel and was hanging to every word and gesture of the characters, all of whom seemed to have been caught in a time warp. I was forgotten. Not just me, the world was forgotten! I knew she watched this show regularly, but this was the first time I was getting a feel of the real thing. She was like a woman possessed!

For the next thirty minutes, I could well have been a display stand in some forgotten corner of a shop. Eyes glued to the TV, she hung on to every word like as though infinite wisdom was being dispersed to the needy. I wondered what would happen if the house were to catch fire that very instant. Would the fire be doused or would the last frame be gazed upon wide eyed as the hungry flames consumed all?

All said and done, this is one show that has run through generations. But what is it that millions around the world find so compelling about the show? There’s basically no story – just gestures, looks and a lot of irritating background music as some grossly dressed characters move around stiffly.

I give up; I’ll never figure it out. I am not sure I want to either!
